The award is only given to individuals who are recognized for making 'an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.' The award was presented to her by Barack Obama.

Fun Fact 8: Oprah Winfrey had a difficult childhood. She came from a single parent family and was raised in poverty. Her life began in a rural part of America before later moving to Milwaukee, an inner-city neighborhood.

Fun Fact 9: Despite the hardships she faced as a child, Oprah Winfrey didn't allow this to deter her. She began a job in radio whilst she was still in high school. She also started co-anchoring the evening news when she was nineteen years old for her local area.

Fun Fact 13: Vernon Winfrey influenced Oprah's life, he was strict and believed that her education was a priority. He was encouraging when she came to live with him as a teenager.
